HALL OF FAME AWARD FOR PADDY O CONNELL: At the Munster All star Athletic Awards night in Rathkeale at the week end, Meelickâ€™s Paddy O Connell was presented with a Hall of Fame Award by the Chairman of the Munster Council Mr Mossy Wolfe.
Paddy received the award for his outstanding contribution to athletics over a long number of years as an athlete, administrator and writer.
Paddy first became involved in athletics during his student days at St. Munchins College and was one of the leaders in founding Redgate Athletic Club in 1949.
Paddy is married for fifty eight years to Rose (O Connor) they have five Children, twelve Grand Children and Five Great Grand Children. They live in Caherdavin and Paddy is still involved in athletics.
â€œThe Blackwater Tragedyâ€: The venue for the forthcoming history lecture by Tom Toomey about â€œThe Blackwater Tragedyâ€, advertised in last weekâ€™s Clare Champion, has been changed to Browneâ€™s Pub, Parteen. The time and date, 7.30pm, Wednesday 20th February, are unchanged. The talk is being organised by the Meelick-Parteen & Cratloe Commemoration Committee who will be unveiling a new monument to mark the event this Easter. Admission is free and all are welcome.
Meelick GAA: Meelick GAA Club will be holding a table quiz next Thursday, January 31st in the Meelick Tavern. The quiz will commence at 8.30pm and there will be several spot prizes up for grabs on the night. Please support what promises to be a very entertaining night, twenty euro per table of four. All welcome.
On Sunday last January 21st , Clare senior hurlers played in Meelick in preparation for the Waterford Crystal League. Sunday January 27th saw the Clare footballers play each other in preparation for the start of the National League. Next Sunday February 3rd, Clare ladies footballers will play Fermanagh in the league at Meelick. Throw in is 2pm
Meelick/ Parteen Ladies Football team: Parteen and Meelick will amalgamate and play as one team using their new name â€œEast Clare Gaelsâ€. First training session will take place in Meelick next Tuesday night.
Registration Nights: Parteen GAA Club are planning to hold registration nights in Parteen National School on Tuesday, 5th February between 6.30-8pm and Scoil Ide National School on Wednesday, 6th February between 6.30-8pm.The Club will also hold a registration morning on Saturday, 9th February at the grounds from 11am to 1pm.
Everybody that registers with the club on or before the 9th of February will be entitled to enter a draw for a 100 euro Dunnes voucher.
Parteen GAA Club: congratulated Sean Kennedy, former Parteen underage footballer who was chosen for the six nations Scotland rugby squad.
Parteen Lotto: The Lotto draw took place at Blackwater Inn on Sunday 27th. There was no winner. The numbers drawn were 07, 12, 14 & 22. Come Dine with me: Season two of the popular Come Dine with me will kick off at the Daggers bar on Thursday, 7th February. Two aspiring chefs will battle it out on Thursday nights and contestants will vote on each dish.
Parteen School Fundraiser: Parteen N.S. will be holding a fundraiser to raise funds for an extension to new classrooms. They will be holding a fun run 10k run/5k walk on Sunday 10th February.
