HEAVENLY HARMONIES IN ST FLANNAN’S CATHEDRAL: What a night of singing from over 220 ladies, gentlemen and young people!
St. Flannan’s Cathedral was packed to capacity on Saturday last for the second Choral concert hosted by the local Ború Community Singers. The huge congregation also had a chance to take part as they joined with the choirs in the singing of the ever popular “Queen of the May”, at the end of a night that saw music from the Baroque to the modern era excellently performed by eight of the finest choirs from Clare, North Tipperary and Limerick. The choirs included Seoda (Limerick): Lough Derg Singers (Mountshannon): Munster Academy Youth Choir (Killaloe): Cantette (Limerick): Gunas (Killaloe-Ballina): Nenagh Octaves (North Tipperary): The Village Singers and Cór Cois Gréíne (Tuamgraney and Castleconnell): Ború Community Singers (Ballina). Well done to all and to their Music Directors, Máire Keary Scanlan: Froukje Powell: Sarah King: Trish Taylor: Niamh Ryan: Tembre de Carteret: Sadie Scanlan. The most professional MC for the night was ‘host choir member’, Dan Minchin.
For Ború Community Singers and their director, Sadie Scanlan, Saturday night’s Concert marks the successful culmination of the second year of a three-year project. The final year, 2014, will see a huge musical celebration in St. Flannan’s Cathedral on Saturday, May 10, as Children/Youth Choirs will perform in the afternoon, adult choirs later in the evening and a Gala Concert at 8pm.
Concert co-ordinator, Sadie Scanlan wishes to thank all who made the 2013 Choral Concert such a successful and enjoyable one: Rev. Stan Evans, Rev. PINK RIBBON WALK/GIG:Ki llaloe Ballina Gospel Choir, under the direction of Carmel Doolan, hosted another successful Great Big Pink Gig in the Lakeside Hotel on Thursday, May 2. All proceeds from the event will be donated to Killaloe Pink Ribbon Walk. Guest performers included Killaloe Ballina Youth Choir: Ennis Gospel Choir: Munster Music Academy Youth Choir: UL Choir: violinist Diane Daly and Hunka Burning Love. The Choir would like to thank the Lakeside Hotel, the performers, prize donors and all who helped to make this event a success.
The fourth annual Pink Ribbon Walk: will take place in Killaloe-Ballina on Sunday, June 9. Since the first walk in 2010 almost 9,000 people have taken tart in this great event in aid of Action Breast Cancer and the organisers are hopeful of your continued support again in 2013. ALZHEIMER’S TEA DAY: Waterman’s Lodge Respite and Day Care Centre will host the annual Tea Day and Cake Sale on May 9th from 10am to 2pm. All are Welcome!
Tea Day is a national day of celebration to honour the memories of people affected by Alzheimer’s and to raise urgently needed funds for services in our area.
HONOUR FOR SONGWRITER: On this Friday, May 10 an official “Gathering” event to honour Tokyo Rosenthal, an award winning singer/songwriter from North Carolina, will take place at 4pm in The Anchor Inn in Killaloe. Mayor of Clare, Councillor Pat Daly will be present to pay tribute to Tokyo who wrote a song called ‘Killaloe’ last year and whose parents resided in Killaloe some years ago. You are all invited to this event.
RIVERSIDE POOL AGM: The annual general meeting of Ballina Riverside Pool takes place at 7.45pm on Wednesday, May 8 in O’Donovan’s Ballina. If you can spare some time to help out from June to September please come along to this meeting.
KILLALOE COAST GUARD ACTIVITIES: On Saturday last Killaloe Coast Guard Unit was tasked by Valentia Coast Guard MRSC to assist HSE paramedics to move an injured casualty from his moored vessel at Killaloe to an awaiting ambulance. The casualty had sustained minor injuries. On Sunday afternoon Killaloe Coast Guard Unit was present at the Famine Commemoration, which was held at the Pier Head. Audrey Kenny placed the wreath at the monument.
SPLASH AND DASH: On Thursday, April 25 over sixty Primary school children from Clare and Tipperary took part in the local round of 2013 Splash and Dash, which was held at the Lakeside Hotel Swimming Pool and Grounds. Participating schools included Killaloe Boys: Killaloe Girls: Ogonnelloe: Ballina: Boher: Burgess and Ballinahinch. This event was sponsored by the Lakeside Hotel and Leisure Centre, Ború Tri club and North Tipperary and Clare Sports partnerships. Transition year students from St. Anne’s community College acted as marshals.
The schools were also represented at the regional Splash and Dash held in UL on Tuesday, April 30 where they joined with competitors form Clare, Tipperary, Kerry and Limerick. Well done to all involved!
Splash and Dash originated at the ‘Junior’ version of the Brian Ború Tri challenge. Its aim is to introduce children from 4th, 5th and 6th classes to a Duathlon experience through swimming (50m) and running (600m).
FUN RUN/WALK: The annual St. Anne’s Community College sponsored fun run/walk will take place from the College on Wednesday, April 15 at 1pm. This year Niamh Briggs, Irish Women’s Rugby ‘star’ full back and kicker, will lead the run. Last year a number of parents and past pupils took part in the run and they will be most welcome to join the teenagers again this year.
SCOUTING ACTIVITIES: Venture and Rover Scouts from around the Province enjoyed last weekend at the National Water Activities Centre at the Two Mile Gate in Killaloe. The staff ensured that all the participants were well looked after. The Venturers and Rovers rowed their Canadian Canoes into Killaloe where they then took part in the traditional Pier Head Dive in glorious sunshine. After lunch, they completed a session on the climbing wall before heading out power boating on an island-hopping excursion on the Lake. Dinner was based on an Italian theme. Sunday saw them sailing on the Lake before returning home.
TIPP FLEADH UPDATE: The Tipp County Fleadh is fast approaching and the local committee is promoting some events in the coming week. On this Sunday you are guaranteed an enjoyable evening in the Lakeside Hotel from 2.30pm to 5.30pm with the Johnny Reidy Ceili Band.
On Wednesday, May 15 the “Gathering” Awards will be presented in O’Donovan’s to musicians who have promoted Irish traditions overseas. All are welcome to attend.
FAMINE COMMEMORATION: Members of the public, Congella Maguire (Clare Heritage Officer) and Killaloe Coast Guard attended last Sunday’s Famine Commemoration Ceremony at the Pier Head. This commemoration was one of a number of events to be held throughout Co. Clare this week. The National Famine Commemoration will be held in Kilrush next Sunday 12th May
This event was co-ordinated by Mary O’Shaughnessy and Una Kierse. Una spoke about the Famine and its consequences in the district. Her father Sean outlined Pre-Famine years in Killaloe-Ballina and was joined by Lydia Hayes and Mary O’Shaughnessy in reading accounts of an “Emigration Scene” at the Pier Head. Prayers were recited by young girls from Killaloe Primary School – Cliodhna Hogan, Tara Mc Namara and Maria Scanlan while local musicians – Mary, Katie and Laura Donoghue, Donal and Eimear Watson and singer Angela Seymour (who sang Ellis Island) truly enhanced the Ceremony. Audrey Kenny from the local Coast Guard Unit laid the Commemorative Wreath.
Following the Ceremony all present enjoyed refreshments and a chat in the nearby Parish Centre.
SOCCER AGM: The annual general meeting of Lough Derg FC will take place on Tuesday May 14 at 8 pm at the Lakeside Hotel. Fully paid up members over eighteen years of age are entitled to attend and vote at the AGM. The club’s website www.loughdergfc.ie is currently being upgraded over the next few weeks and will be re-launched just after the upcoming AGM.
