This Saturday's cycle in Boher is in memory of the late Ciara McCarthy

EVERYONE who had the pleasure of meeting Ciara McCarthy during her short life will never forget her.

Tragically the seven-year-old from Ballysimon passed away last year after bravely battling illness but her memory lives on.

Boher Community Development Association contacted the McCarthys last year to ask if they could put on a charity cycle. They agreed and immediately suggested all funds go to Cliona’s Foundation, who assisted the family. Over €5,700 was handed over to the Limerick charity.

The event has now become a fixture in the local calendar as the second Ciara McCarthy memorial cycle for Cliona’s Foundation takes place this Saturday, June 6.

It begins at Boher Community Centre at 7pm - registration from 6.15pm. It is a 40km loop in the countryside but there are plenty of short cuts.

Pat O’Connell, chairman of the Boher Community Development Association, says you certainly don’t have to be Stephen Roche to take part.

A very large crowd is expected to participate and the route will be stewarded by members of the development association.

“There is a great community spirit in Boher and we are delighted to host the event again this year,” said Pat.

Over 130 cyclists took part in last year’s cycle, led by members of the McCarthy family - James, Pat, Richard and Noreen.

Ciara’s mum and dad, James and Aoife, and her beloved brother, Thomas will be supporting the cyclists.

James is looking forward to the cycle and is hoping for a fine day in Boher on Saturday.

A total of €15,100 was handed over to Cliona’s Foundation from a number of fundraisers in memory of Ciara.

Terry Ring, of Cliona’s Foundation, said at the time that the money raised was a beautiful gesture in memory of a beautiful little girl.

“It will go directly to families with critically ill children to help them with their non-medical day to day expenses while taking care of a sick child.

“It has come out of tragic circumstances but it shows the popularity of the McCarthy and Madigan families and the good will of people,” said Terry.
