KILFINANE ATHLETIC CLUB : The first important club race of the year takes place in Rathkeale this SundayJanuary 26 . The Limerick 4mile championship is an event that we have always done well at down the years. Training has been going well for the event so hopefully we can bring home some individual and team honours once again, best of luck to everyone running. Thursday night training continues to grow and grow. Runners of all abilities running together under the floodlights of the community walk is really working out well. Last week we had a mix of training methods, intervals, tempo and fartlek running to really maximise the opportunity that training in a large group affords. However, far from being a session designed for only the elite runners, it is the huge improvements in the fitness levels and running form of our newest runners that has been the biggest highlight of the year so far. Another benefit we are seeing is that runners are meeting up themselves for longer runs outside of the club training times. One particular idea that may prove successful is a run on Wednesday morning 10 am at the Sportsfield. This was raised as an idea for those who find the evening time training unsuitable for them. Again like all club events, it’s open to everyone of all abilities. Looking forward to February, two events that will be well supported by the club are both on 23 February. Firstly the Adare 10km race, hosted by West Limerick AC. This is one of the best organised races every year, a lovely course around the picturesque backdrop of Adare. For those who are starting out running or getting back from injury etc, there is a 5k run in Ballygiblin near Mitchelstown. This out and back course organised by Galtee Runners AC is an ideal first road race for some of our newest runners. It’s a pity that both events are on the same day but there should not be an overlap of entrants as they are aimed at different markets. Lastly, another reminder that it’s not too late to kickstart your new year fitness by joining us on Thursday 7-8pm. Feedback has been very positive and it’s great to see a small community of runners based mainly in Kilfinane and Ardpatrick emerging.
