RIP: Tributes paid as Irish soccer legend Roy Keane's 'beloved mother' Marie passes away

Tributes have been paid following the death of Irish soccer legend Roy Keane's mother, Marie, who has been remembered as "a lovely lady" by those who knew her.

Marie Keane (née Lynch), of Carhoo, Rathpeacon in Cork, died peacefully on March 27, 2026, surrounded by her loving family and in the care of staff at Marymount University Hospital and Hospice, according to a notice published on RIP.ie.

The notice states that she was the dearly loved wife of the late Maurice (Mossie) and beloved mother of Denis, Johnson, Hilary, Roy and Pat.

She was predeceased by her brother Pat, her niece Estella and her nephew Thomas.

According to the RIP.ie notice, Marie will be "sadly missed by her loving family, sisters Ina, Annette and Josephine, brothers Jack, Leo, Michael and Noel, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, daughters-in-law Linda, Theresa and Mary, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, her great neighbours and friends."

Condolence messages have poured in online, remembering Marie as a kind and "lovely lady".

One message shared online said: "Deepest sympathies to all the family. A lovely, genuine lady who I had the pleasure to meet as a kid and was very nice to my parents and me and remains a fond memory. May she rest in peace."

Another tribute read: "Sincere sympathy to all of the Keane family on the sad loss of their wonderful mother, and grandmother, Marie. Marie was a lovely lady whom I always love to meet and have a chat with. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her."

Tributes were also paid by Rockmount AFC, Roy Keane's boyhood club, who wrote: "Sincere condolences to extended Keane and Lynch family on the passing of Marie."

Another mourner wrote: "So very sorry to hear of Marie's passing. She was a wonderful neighbour back in the Devonshire Street days and a joy to meet in the subsequent years. A real lady. Deepest condolences to all of Marie's family and friends. May she rest in peace."

Funeral arrangements have been confirmed, with visitation at O'Connor Bros. Funeral Home, North Gate Bridge, on Monday, March 30, from 6.00pm to 7.00pm, with prayers at 6.45pm.

Requiem Mass will take place on Tuesday, March 31, at 11am in the Church of the Resurrection, Farranree, followed by burial at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Kilcully.
