If you think keeping fit means slogging away on a treadmill, think again. Jiving, a lively infectious dance style rooted in Irish culture is fast becoming one of the country’s most popular ways to exercise, socialise and unwind.
Tom “Jive”, a Cork-based dance teacher who travels the country with his three week beginner courses, says the appeal is simple: “You’re exercising while enjoying yourself. People tell me the hour and a half flies by, they’ve had a workout without even realising it.”
Physical benefits
Unlike a trip to the gym, jiving doesn’t feel like a chore. It gets the heart pumping, builds stamina, improves balance and coordination, and works muscles from head to toe. “You’re keeping fit, but it never feels like hard work,” Tom explains.
Mental benefits
Beyond the physical, jiving offers a real mental boost. “The minute people walk in, I get them up dancing. Before they know it, two hours have passed and they’ve completely forgotten about themselves and their worries,” Tom says. The craic, music and movement combine to melt away stress.
Social benefits
Jiving is also highly social. Tom’s classes attract dancers of all abilities and all ages, and new friendships blossom in every room. “It’s like going on holiday,” he smiles. “You remember the people you met and the fun you had. I always give a little break so everyone mingles, and by the end nobody wants the night to end.”

Tom has taught thousands of peoples over the years including podcasting star Johnny B from 'The 2 Johnnies'.
Tom insists that the beauty of jiving is that anyone can learn: “If you’ve two left feet, I’ll make one right. Nearly everyone who signs up finishes the three weeks, it’s not as hard as you think, and it gives people real confidence.”
With the surge of interest in country music in Ireland and artists like Nathan Carter and Mike Denver, jiving is enjoying a cultural revival. Whether at a wedding, a night out, or simply for fun, it’s a skill that gets you off your chair and onto the dancefloor.
For those considering giving it a go, Tom’s advice is clear: “The most important step is the doorstep. Once you’re in the door, you’ll surprise yourself.”
Combined with the fact that the evenings are shorter, wetter and colder Jive dance classes are the perfect addition to your winter wellness routine.
