Tributes have been pouring in for a much-loved 78-year-old Irish man who died tragically in a road accident on Tuesday.
Paddy O'Donoghue, a father-of-seven, from Gortahoonig, Muckross and formerly of Clonkeen, was cycling when he was struck by a vehicle shortly after 1.40pm on the R569 at Church Grounds, Kilgarvan, Co Kerry.
Emergency services responded to the scene, but sadly, Paddy was pronounced dead at the scene. Gardaí have issued an appeal for witnesses and dash-cam footage from the area between 1pm and 2pm as investigations continue.
A proud husband, father and grandfather, Paddy is deeply mourned by his wife Brenda, his children Florence, Áine, Denise, Brenda, Báirbre, Patrick and Alice, and his 17 grandchildren. His death notice describes him as being "sadly missed" by his extended family, neighbours, and many friends.
Muckross Rowing Club remembered Paddy as "an ever generous and supportive member" who was instrumental in key community projects, including the Muckross Community Centre and the club's boathouse. "Paddy was central to the efforts… a proud, visible and lasting community legacy," they said.
Glenflesk GAA called him "a true Glenflesk stalwart as a player, mentor and lifelong supporter."
Former colleagues remembered him as "a fantastic engineer" with Kerry County Council, describing him as "a man of boundless energy… always with a smile on his face."
One mourner wrote: "Fr Paddy's cards on Wednesday nights will never be the same without the real Paddy O'Donoghue."
Another tribute read: "He was a lovely man always with a smile. A great footballer for Glenflesk and East Kerry… may Paddy rest in peace."
Paddy's funeral will take place at St Mary's Cathedral in Killarney on Saturday morning following repose at O'Shea's Funeral Home on Friday from 4pm to 6.30pm. He will be laid to rest in Killaha Cemetery.
