A large-scale search and rescue operation is underway in Buncrana, County Donegal with fears that a number of children may tragically be drowned or missing.

The Rescue 118 helicopter and three lifeboats are desperately searching the waters of Lough Swilly, while a number of ambulances have arrived at Buncrana Pier.

The unfolding emergency near Ludden Beach is being coordinated by the Malin Head Coastguard, and local vessels are also helping in the search.

According to Donegal Live, unconfirmed reports suggest that a number of children may have gotten into difficulties while swimming in the area – possibly near Ned’s Point – and there are fears that it could have already resulted in a tragic outcome.

Earlier, two ambulances were seen rushing away from the pier under garda escort, and distraught friends and family members have gathered at the Shore Front.

It’s understood that one boy may have drowned, while one may still be missing, with two others having made it ashore alive.

It’s also understood that the children involved may be foreign nationals.

A Garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí and emergency services are currently engaged in a search and rescue operation off the coast of Buncrana in Co. Donegal this afternoon, Saturday May 10, 2025.

"Garda units from Donegal North are involved in this operation, alongside the Coast Guard and ambulance services."

The search remains ongoing. No further information is available at this time."
