Call from 'concerned member of the public' hailed after dangerous motorist fails breath test

Gardaí arrested a motorist who failed a roadside breathalyser test after a call from a "concerned member of the public" raised the alarm.

A total of five drivers were arrested under suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant in Wexford on Sunday, gardaí confirmed.

In one case, a concerned member of the public reported dangerous driving in Enniscorthy and gardaí swooped to track down the car.

The driver subsequently failed a roadside breathalyser test and was arrested as gardaí await the results of a blood sample.

In a statement posted on social media, gardaí said: "Five drivers were arrested yesterday in Wexford under suspicion of being under the influence of an intoxicant.

"One such arrest occurred after Gardaí in Enniscorthy responded to a report of dangerous driving made by a concerned member of the public. It was alleged that a vehicle was overtaking dangerously and forcing oncoming traffic to take evasive action.

"Gardaí quickly located the vehicle and conducted a roadside breath test on the driver, which returned a “fail” result. The driver was arrested, and a blood sample was later obtained. Gardaí are now awaiting the results of the analysis, and this individual may be facing court proceedings.

"An Garda Síochána would like to thank the member of the public who reported this incident. This is a strong example of how public vigilance can help us remove dangerous drivers from our roads and keep our communities safe."
