Thousands eligible for one-off €2,000 Social Welfare payment - here's how to apply

Thousands of people across Ireland could be eligible for a one-off social welfare payment of €2,000 which is set to open on Tuesday, April 1.

The Carer's Support grant, which has increased from €1,850 from last year, provides a lump-sum payment to carers which can be spent however the recipient wishes.

The grant is available to all full-time carers across the country who are providing care for people with disabilities and the elderly.

The one-off grant will not be means tested and is paid for each person the carer is caring for, meaning they will receive multiple payments if they are caring for multiple people.

Who is eligible?

The Carer's Support Grant will be paid automatically to those receiving the following payments:

  • Carer's Allowance (both full and half rate)
  • Carer's Benefit
  • Domicilliary Care Allowance

If you are not on the above payments, you may still qualify if you are:

  • Aged 16 or over
  • Ordinarily resident in Ireland
  • Caring for a person full-time
  • Caring for a person for at least 6 months (must include the first Thursday in June)
  • Living with the person you are caring for

During this six month caring period, you cannot:

  • Work more than 18.5 hours per week (as an employee or in self-employment)
  • Take part in an education or training course for more than 18.5 hours per week
  • Receive Jobseeker's Allowance or Jobseeker's Benefit
  • Sign on for credited contributions
  • Live in a hospital, convalescent home or similar institution
