A garda is being treated in hospital after they were struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run incident in a suburban housing estate in Limerick city.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following the incident of endangerment that occurred in the Brú na Gruadán estate, Castletroy on Monday evening.

"Gardaí, while responding to an unrelated incident, were alerted to a vehicle in the area travelling on false license plates. A car was identified and during an attempt to coordinate a controlled stop, the car struck a garda and fled the scene," said a spokesperson.

Following the incident, the injured garda was taken to University Hospital Limerick for treatment of what have been described as non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigating gardaí are appealing for anyone who was in the Brú na Gruadán estate, Castletroy, Limerick and the surrounding areas between 6pm and 6.30pm on Monday to contact them.

Any persons with mobile phone or dash cam footage are also asked to make that footage available.
