Investigations are underway after an elderly man was killed in a road crash in County Cavan in the early hours of this Christmas Day.

Gardai say the fatal incident, involving two cars, happened on the N55 at Clarebane at around 12.40am. 

"A man, aged in late 80s, was pronounced deceased at the scene.  His body has been removed to Cavan General Hospital where a post mortem will take place," said a garda spokesperson. 

The four occupants of the second car were taken to Cavan General Hospital to be treated for what are described as "non-life threatening injuries".

The road was closed following the crash to facilitate an examination by Forensic Collision Investigators.  

Gardai are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward. 

Gardaí are appealing for any road users who may have camera footage, including dash-cam, and who were travelling on the N55 between 12:15am and 12:45am this Wednesday morning to make this footage available.
