President Michael D Higgins with President of Egypt
There has been arrangements made for eight children and their families from Gaza, who are currently in Cairo, to evacuate to Ireland shortly for medical treatment, a statement from President Michael D Higgins confirms.
President Michael D Higgins met with the President of Egypt Abdel Fattah el-Sisi at a courtesy call in Àras an Uachtaráin on morning of December 11 to discuss such matters.
The two Heads of State, according to a press release, discussed the current situation in the Middle East , including in Gaza and the recent events in Syria.
The press release stated: "the outrageous suffering in the absence of the ceasefire in Gaza was the central part of their discussion."
The eight kids currently in Cairo will receive treatment in Ireland through the Union Civil Protection Mechanism, following a request from the World Health Organisation.
