'Slow down and be patient' - urgent appeal to motorists as black ice is reported

One local authority - Kerry County Council - says a number of local roads remain closed this Friday morning and it is advising motorists that black ice patches have been reported on many roads

Motorists in counties which were most impacted by heavy snowfall on Thursday are being urged to exercise caution as many local roads remain hazardous with widespread reports of black ice.

Several centimetres of snow fell in some parts of the country and with a low temperature warning still in place, the snow has yet to fully melt in places - creating difficult travelling conditions.

One local authority - Kerry County Council - says a number of local roads remain closed this Friday morning and it is advising motorists that black ice patches have been reported on many roads.

"The imperative on drivers is to slow down, maintain greater distance to any car in front and be patient. Be particularly careful of vulnerable road users - cyclists and pedestrians," read a post X, formerly Twitter, while another reads: "Many local roads in North and East Kerry remain hazardous, especially around Brosna, Knocknagoshel and Scartaglen."

Similar appeals have been issued in other counties which experienced heavy snowfall - particularly in the west and south west.

A status yellow Low Temperature/Ice warning for Ireland which came into effect at 8pm on Wednesday remains valid until midday this Friday.

Met Eireann says it will continue to be "very cold with widespread frost and icy stretches" in places.
