A driver has been clocked at more than double the speed limit in Co Meath has part of a nationwide crack down on driving offences this bank holiday weekend.

Since 7am on Saturday, gardaí have been out detecting poor driving behaviours such as driving above the speed limit as part of the October bank holiday road safety operation.

There have been no fatal road traffic collisions in the last 24 hours of the October bank holiday weekend road policing operation but two people died in crashes between Friday and Saturday morning.

A total of 79,742 vehicles have been checked for speeding as part of the blitz.

"It is positive that the majority of motorists are travelling within the designated speed, however, 136 drivers have been detected and some have been especially dangerous," gardaí said in a statement.

They revealed a driver travelling at 167km/h in an 80km/h zone on the R162, Leggagh, Castletown, Meath, was one of the worst offenders. They published some of the other notable offences detected:

- 88km/h in a 50km/h zone on the Newcastle Road, Galway.
- 90km/h in a 60km/h zone on the Callan Road, Kilkenny.
- 167km/h in an 80km/h zone on the R162, Leggagh, Castletown, Meath.
- 122km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N13, Maghera Beg, Manorcunningham, Donegal.

"An Garda Síochána advises all drivers to please slow down and drive safely today and over the rest of the long weekend as so many of us take to the roads," a statement concluded.
