Irish international hospitalised after car is engulfed in flames following road crash

Firefighters from Foynes and Newcastle West in County Limerick attended the scene of the crash

A woman who was rushed to hospital after a car burst into flames following a collision in County Limerick at the weekend is a current Irish soccer international.

It has widely been reported this Tuesday that Savannah McCarthy (pictured below), who is from Listowel, County Kerry, was in one of the vehicles.

The two-car collision took place on the N69 near the village of Glin shortly before 8pm on Sunday. Gardai, firefighters from Newcastle West and Foynes, and paramedics with the National Ambulance Service all attended the scene.

A garda spokesperson said a woman, aged in her 20s, was brought to University Hospital Limerick to be treated for injuries which "are believed to be non life-threatening at this time".

Ms McCarthy, aged 27, is an experienced centre back who can also play in midfield. She is currently on Shamrock Rovers' books.

The Kerry woman has previously played with Galway, Cork City, Glasgow City and UCD Waves. Ms McCarthy won her first cap for Ireland in 2016. She was ruled out of last year's World Cup after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Two men were also taken to hospital following Sunday's incident.

“One man, aged in his 40s, was taken to University Hospital Limerick for treatment of injuries believed to be non life-threatening.

“A second man, aged in his 50s, was taken to University Hospital Kerry to be treated for injuries which are believed to be non life-threatening,” said the garda spokesperson.

Firefighters put out the fire and they remained at the scene until after 11pm. The road was closed for a number of hours.
