A young Irishman has been found dead inside a prison cell in Portugal.
The 29-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday following an alleged assault on a woman who was well known to him.
The National Guard in Albufeira said that the woman, also aged 29, was attacked with a knife.
She was taken to hospital for treatment to her injuries.
The police said that the man was being held in Albufeira and was found dead inside his cell.
Emergency services were called immediately but he was declared dead at the scene.
Police said that the circumstances of the death inside the cell are being investigated.
A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs said it is aware of the case and providing consular assistance.
“As with all consular cases, the Department does not comment on the detail of individual cases,” the statement added.
