The technical issues were first reported at around 7pm on Wednesday
Tens of thousands of WhatsApp users in Ireland and around the world have been left unable to send messages, pictures and videos due to an outage on the messaging platform.
The technical issues were first reported at around 7pm this Wednesday with many people taking to social media platforms such as X and Facebook to vent their frustrations.
According to outage tracking website Downdetector.com, more than 10,000 users in Ireland reported problems with WhatsApp between 7pm and 7.30pm. Of the reports received, more than half related to the sending of messages on the platform.
There are also reports that messages within the app are appearing with a timer symbol beside them, without the ticks that normally appear to indicate the message status.
Acknowledging the outage in a post on X, formerly Twitter, WhatsApp said it was working to restore the service. "We know some people are experiencing issues right now, we're working on getting things back to 100% for everyone as quickly as possible," they said.

As of 9.30pm, there was no firm indication as to when the service will be fully restored.
