Dolores McMahon, Navan, Co Meath is in possession of an Easter Egg from way back in 1973
Dolores McMahon of Navan, County Meath, reveals that she is in possession of an Easter Egg that was gifted to her back in 1973, making the egg, a remarkable 51 years old this Easter.
Dolores revealed on the Ray D'Arcy show that the egg was given to her by her mother and late father way back in 1973: "I got my egg back in 1873 by my mam and dad. They owned a shop and we were in business all our lives and we sold Easter eggs. I was a young teenager when I received this Easter egg from my parents."
She goes on to tell story of how the Easter egg has a special place in her heart in relation to her late father: "My dad was ill, I was the youngest at home. I got this amazing Fuller's egg. It was beautiful, it had baby blue and pink flowers on it. It was a very luxurious egg. My father died a couple of months after I received the egg. There was no such thing as luxurious eggs. I was elated."
"I had never seen anything like and hence was probably the reason why I couldn't open it."
She then says she made no conscious effort to keep the egg in memory of her father who sadly passed away shortly after giving her the egg.
Then she reveals that the egg has travelled the whole country with her: "I have had that egg, I've worked in Dublin, I've stayed in flats, apartments that egg stayed with me everywhere. It came back home to Nobber and after I met my husband it came to Navan and has been in Navan ever since. "
She tells us then that has become somewhat of an Easter tradition in her household and the egg only sees the light of day on Easter morning and then goes back in the press for the rest of the year.
