A motorist who was allegedly caught travelling at high speed on one of the busiest motorways in the country has been charged with dangerous driving, gardai have confirmed.
The incident, which happened on the M8 Cork - Dublin motorway on Thursday, has been highlighted on social media ahead of the busy bank holiday weekend.
According to gardai, members of the Roads Policing Unit in Mitchelstown, north Cork were on patrol when they detected the silver Volkswagen which was travelling at 200km/h - 80km/h above the legal limit.
Weather conditions in the area were poor at the time.
"They were stopped and it was found that they were an unaccompanied Learner with no L-plates," read the post on social media.
Gardai say the driver also tested positive for cocaine and that samples provided by the motorist have been sent for further analysis.
Following the detection and the roadside drugs test, the driver was arrested and the Volkswagen was subsequently seized under the Road Traffic Act.
The driver is to be prosecuted before the courts for dangerous driving and further charges may also be preferred.
If convicted of dangerous driving, they face a mandatory disqualification and a possible prison sentence and a fine.
