Gardaí are investigating a fatal assault of a man that occurred between 3pm and 4pm on today at a residence on School Street in Kilcock, Co Kildare.

A man in his 50s was pronounced deceased at the scene. His body remains at the scene while a post-mortem examination will be conducted tomorrow morning at the mortuary at Naas General Hospital by State Pathologist Sally Ann Collis.

The scene on School Street remains preserved for examination by the Garda Technical Bureau.

According to a spokesperson for the gardai, the investigation is being led by a Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) at Leixlip Garda Station and a Garda Family Liaison Officer (FLO) has been appointed to liaise with the family of the deceased.

"A man in his 40s has been arrested on suspicion of murder as part of this investigation. He is currently detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a Garda Station in Kildare," they commented.
