Parents in five counties are being urged to vaccinate their children against Covid-19.
On the recommendation of the National Immunisation Advisory Committee (NIAC), the HSE is advising parents in Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim, Monaghan and Sligo to vaccinate their children aged between 6 months and 11 years.
According to the HSE, Covid-19 vaccines are recommended for children aged 6 months to 4 years who have a health condition that puts them at high risk of severe illness if they get Covid-19.
A statement released by the HSE this week read: "For all children in this age group, the recommendation of NIAC is that the benefits of vaccination are greater than the risks from the vaccine, meaning this age group can be offered the vaccine."
Children will reportedly need two doses of the vaccine for the best possible protection against Covid-19, with the second dose given eight weeks after the first dose.
General Manager of the Covid-19 Vaccination Programme at Community Healthcare Cavan Donegal Leitrim Monaghan Sligo (CH CDLMS), Sinead McConnell, said, "The HSE is urging parents and guardians of children aged six months to 11 years to avail of the COVID-19 vaccine ahead of the winter season.
"It's expected that Flu and RSV will shortly be circulating and vaccination against Covid-19 is the best protection against the virus."
