National: One of the busiest hospitals in the country restricts all visitors

Covid-19 and flu outbreaks in one busy midlands hospital has caused strict restrictions to be implemented.

Portiuncula University Hospital is appealing to the public not to visit the hospital if they are feeling unwell or have respiratory symptoms.

The hospital is currently dealing with a flu and Covid-19 outbreak on St John’s Ward and visiting to that ward will be facilitated on "compassionate grounds", on an exceptional basis only. People are asked to contact the ward manager in advance.

Marguerite Dooley, Deputy Hospital Manager said: “These Covid-19 and flu outbreaks present a risk to patients, many of whom are very ill, and we must take every measure to protect them.

“We appreciate that restricting visiting at this time of year is difficult for patients and their families. However, this is a necessary measure to ensure the hospital can continue to keep all our patients safe.

“Everyone coming to the hospital should follow public health guidance and use hand gel regularly during their visit, remember your cough etiquette and if needed, masks are available for use throughout the hospital. We thank members of the public for their co-operation.” 

The HSE says it is not too late to get your flu and Covid-19 vaccinations, and is urging people in high-risk groups to get vaccinated.
