A SEARCH operation is underway at Foynes Port, following the discovery of millions of euro worth of cocaine on a cargo ship.
It's understood the vessel, which was transporting grain, was boarded by Revenue and Customs officers this Tuesday afternoon shortly after it arrived at the west Limerick port.
Several media outlets have reported that suspected drugs, worth up to €40 million, have been found on board.
In response to a media query, a Revenue spokesperson confirmed an operation is underway but declined to elaborate any further.
"Revenue Customs service are currently undertaking a live operation and no further comment is available at this time," they said.
Confirming they are aware of the operation a spokesperson for An Garda Siochana declined to comment further saying: "This is a matter for Revenue Customs service at this time."
Security around Foynes Port is tight this Tuesday night with further searches of the ship to be carried out on Wednesday.
