Uninsured driver never held a licence and tested positive for cocaine

An uninsured driver was caught by gardaí using new detection technology and found to be driving under the influence of cocaine in Westmeath.

The Delvin Roads Policing Unit stopped the car after the Mobility App showed that it was uninsured, a social media post from An Garda Síochána outlined.

It was then found that the driver never held a licence and they tested positive for cocaine.

The driver was arrested and the car seized.

A garda spokesperson confirmed that court proceedings are due to follow.

Gardaí recently announced advances in technology have made it easier for them to detect people who are driving without insurance.

It was confirmed in recent weeks that automatic number plate recognition technology is now available on a mobile device for gardaí and was described as a "game changer" in terms of catching people who are committing a variety of road traffic violations.
