A pedestrian has died after being struck by a vehicle at a motorway junction in Co Louth in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The incident took place at junction 16 southbound on the M1 motorway in Dundalk at around 2.45am.

The driver, a man in his early 50s, and his three passengers, aged in their 50s and 40s, were treated by ambulance personnel at the scene for non-life threatening injuries.

The scene of the collision has been preserved to allow for a technical examination of the scene, and local diversions are in place.
