RTÉ radio continues to dominate rivals latest listenership figures confirm

RTÉ continues to dominate the radio market across Ireland, the latest listenership figures has confirmed.

While the national broadcaster attracts nearly 2 million listeners across its network of stations each week, there is mixed news for some of its biggest stars.

According to the latest JNLR/ Ipsos MRBI figures, (between July 2022 to July 2023), Ryan Tubridy saw a drop in listenership. His show on RTE Radio One dropped by 1,000 listeners to 334,000.

Morning Ireland remains Ireland’s most listened to radio programme, with 440,000 listeners while the Brendan O'Connor Show (Saturday and Sunday) and Today with Claire Byrne (weekdays) complete the top five programmes nationally.

Seventeen of the top 20 programmes are broadcast on RTÉ with just three making the cut from Today FM - The Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show, Dermot & Dave and Alison Curtis (Saturday morning).

Commenting on the figures, Peter Woods, Head of RTÉ Radio 1 said: "There are strong performances across all our core programmes, ensuring RTÉ Radio 1 is the primary destination for news, current affairs and for entertainment also. Our music programmes are also performing well, with good numbers for John Creedon and Louise Duffy consolidating her place in the schedule. On weekends Brendan O'Connor remains essential listening, while Colm Ó Mongáin, who is new to the schedule, has added numbers on Saturday and during the weeknights on Late Debate. This is a book that shows RTÉ Radio 1 is continuing to connect with audiences across right across the week."

Speaking after he received the latest listenership figures, Today FM's Ian Dempsey said: “What can I say? Only thanks… thanks to every single person who chooses to spend breakfast time with us. You wouldn’t be in this game if you didn’t love what you do – I love it, the team loves it and I’ll see you in the morning!”
