AN ADDITIONAL 78,000 children will now receive additional free healthcare benefits thanks to the extension of one HSE scheme.
Children aged six and seven will receive free GP Visit Cards, meaning free GP care for 78,000 more children. Families and guardians are being encouraged to register online.
Since 2015, children under six years of age have been eligible for GP Visit Cards. The measure extending eligibility to children these ages was announced recently by the government, and is supported by an agreement with the Irish Medical Organisation.
“Our staff have been working hard in the background preparing for this change,” said Shaun Flanagan, HSE Assistant National Director, Primary Care Reimbursement Service.
“We have updated our systems and processes to make it as easy as possible for people to apply for the new GP Visit Cards on behalf of eligible children.
“Remember, the quickest and easiest way to apply for a GP visit card for your child is online,” Mr Flanagan reminds people.
If you have a GP visit card, you don't have to pay to see your doctor but you will have to pay for medicines and other services.
Eligibility for income based means tested GP Visit Cards is being widened in two phases, the first being introduced on Monday, September 11, and the second on Monday, November 13.
