Irish man arrested on suspicion of murder of Irish woman in Spain

A man from Ireland has been arrested on suspicion of the murder of an Irish woman in Spain.

The woman was found with fatal injuries lying on a floor in a hotel in Salou, a coastal resort town south of Barcelona.

Police were called to the hotel at 10.30pm local time on Sunday night.

The man was arrested at the scene.

Officers from the Mossos d’Esquadra force said the man had sustained some injuries.

Police said emergency services made attempts to resuscitate the woman, but she was later declared dead.

Tanaiste and foreign affairs minister Micheal Martin described the incident as “shocking”.

He said consular assistance was being provided to the family of the Irishwoman killed.

“It’s shocking and particularly the fact that another woman has died as a result of a very violent attack, by all appearances,” he told RTE Radio One.

Mr Martin said he did not yet have all the details around what had happened.

“But it is very shocking news that a young woman should be killed in a violent manner like is and we await further news in respect of that,” he added.

“Our department officials are providing consular assistance there to the family and to do everything we can to help those impacted by that terrible event in Salou in Spain.”

A Garda spokesman said: “An Garda Siochana is aware of an alleged incident that took place in the Spanish town of Salou involving Irish citizen/s on Sunday July 2 2023.

“As this is an investigation led by the Spanish authorities, An Garda Siochana has no further comment at this time.”
