THIS Wednesday was a very special day for Castleconnell’s John Gilhooly and his family as he was formally awarded an OBE at Buckingham Palace.

Mr Gilhooly is director of the world famous Wigmore Hall in London and chairman of the Royal Philharmonic Society, also based in London.

He was presented with the OBE Insignia (Officer of The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) for his “outstanding services to music”.

When it was announced last June Mr Gilhooly modestly told the Limerick Leader that when he received the letter he jokingly presumed it was a “parking fine or request to do jury service”!

He had to mention it to the Irish Government and even when it was all confirmed he said he still could not believe it.

While his working life is in London, home is still Limerick and he regularly returns to Castleconnell.
