The M20 Limerick to Cork will receive funding to support essential works and upgrades
LIMERICK is set to receive €133 million in national roads funding in 2026, delivering a major investment in road safety, maintenance and infrastructure resilience across the county.
The funding forms part of a €1.5 billion nationwide roads package, representing a 13% increase on 2025, aimed at strengthening Ireland’s national, regional and local road network.
The €133 million allocation to Limerick City and County Council will support: Essential pavement renewal and resurfacing, road safety upgrades, maintenance of bridges and structures, climate resilience works to protect against severe weather events and protection and regeneration of key national routes serving Limerick communities.
Of the overall national allocation: €800 million is being invested in national roads, €659 million in Exchequer capital funding via Transport Infrastructure Ireland, €104 million for national roads under Public Private Partnerships and €33 million for regular maintenance of national roads by local authorities.

Welcoming the announcement, Fine Gael Minister Patrick O’Donovan TD said:
“This €133 million investment is a major boost for Limerick and will directly improve safety and reliability on our national roads. Our road network is critical to Limerick’s economy — supporting local businesses, connecting families to work and education, and ensuring safe journeys across the county. We are prioritising the protection and renewal of the roads we rely on every day; while also ensuring they are resilient to increasingly severe weather.”
Nationally, the wider €718 million allocation for regional and local roads will see thousands of kilometres maintained and improved, alongside targeted safety and climate adaptation measures.
Minister O’Donovan added:
“For Limerick, from our city to our rural communities, safe and reliable roads are essential. This funding ensures continued investment in the infrastructure that keeps our county moving and our economy growing.”
