AN ANALYSIS of collated garda data acquired from fatal, serious and minor road traffic collisions in 2025 has identified multiple crash-prone stretches of road across Limerick, ranging from busy urban roads in the city to regional and national routes serving towns and rural communities.

The highest number of crashes was recorded along the R511 corridor between Roxboro Roundabout and the R527 road on Mulgrave Street in Limerick city, where nine collisions occurred.

Other notable locations include the N24 Ballysimon Road, with six crashes, and the R522 road between Tiermena and Castlemahon and the outskirts of Newcastle West, which recorded five. Smaller but persistent clusters of collisions were also identified on roads in Drumbeg, Rathkeale, Knockanerra, Castleconnell, Raheen and along sections of the N21 and N69.

There were three collisions along the R520 road from Ballinakill Beg to Newcastle West and along the R510 road near Mungret Gate to the roundabout in Raheen near the Great National South Court Hotel.

Many areas recorded two collisions having occurred including between the N21 road between Old Barna and Ballintubrid and the N21 on the outskirts of Newcastle West near Shangarry.

A total of 390 new safety camera zones are now operational, bringing the total number of safety camera zones nationwide to 1,901. The primary purpose of safety cameras is to reduce speed-related collisions, lessen injuries and save lives. Safety camera zones are identified high-risk locations and can include school safety zones, community engagement request zones and road works safety zones.

Community requests are locations, which have been highlighted by Garda Divisions arising from concerns held by the community or observations of local gardaí in relation to speeding activity on certain roads.

Three locations in Limerick were highlighted: along the R525 road in Castleconnell to near Dereen and Lacka, along the R506 road near Woodsdown and Annacotty to Grange Upper, Annacotty Business Park and along the R859 road in Mungret.
