Ford Tourneo Custom that provides high levels of comfort and spaciousness for up to nine people
LARGE people carrier vehicles are the usual method of transport for hotels when shuttling people to the airport, for private business or as a taxi. My most recent test drive of such a vehicle was in the long wheelbase version of the Ford Tourneo Custom that provides high levels of comfort and spaciousness for up to nine people and a huge boot for their luggage.
This big people mover, based on a Transit Custom van, can also be a practical solution for a large family heading for an adventurous weekend away. Short and long wheelbase versions are offered.
It certainly looks the business with its sheer bulk, increased width front and rear, and planted appearance. My car looked very smart in an Orange Glow livery which added cheer on wet days.
The interior spec had a high level of fit and finish. In my car, the mid and back row seats faced each other, and there was still an awesome capacity for luggage behind. As each seat is individual, the mid ones in each row can act as tables if there are just four rear passengers. For families, there are ISOFIX points available on all three second row seats as well as the two outer seats in the third row. The tailgate opens high to allow you shelter in the rain if you are loading up the boot.
I was surprised at how easy it is to drive this big vehicle. Everything is car-like except that you sit up so high. The two upfront are surrounded by glass so have a commanding view out in all directions; huge side windows help a lot in this regard and there are van-type double side mirrors. Being able to see out through the huge tailgate’s window was a real bonus. However, there was no overhead grip on the driver’s door (just a sunglasses holder), no blind spot cover and no reversing camera, but some could be added as extras.
Cubbies include an overhead area, compartments on the top of the dash, excellent door bins, mug sized cupholders and a lockable glovebox. Seats are hugely comfy and supportive. Front ones can be heated and the driver’s gets lumbar supports. Gears are ideally located on the jut out of the lower dash, close to your left hand while the pull up handbrake is low to the floor.
The instrument panel features a 13-inch central touchscreen with blue-hued graphics and Ford’s SYNC 4 infotainment system; wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility come as standard. Big knobs for climate control are always welcome.
My vehicle was the Limited Shuttlebus version powered by a 2.0 diesel outputting 136hp. While the manual gearbox was user-friendly, I’d prefer an auto one especially when driving in heavy traffic. I achieved 8.3 L/100kms equal to 34mpg. Annual road tax for my test drive vehicle was a hefty €1,250.
Numerous safety features include roll stability control and SideWind Mitigation, welcome for a car this height.
The Tourneo Custom is produced at the Ford Ottoman’s new plant in Turkey. A new generation of the car has recently started in production, with enhanced comfort and safety features as well as battery-electric and plug-in hybrid powertrains. I look forward to giving it a run in due course.
Prices start at €47,724; my test vehicle from €77,100 (not including delivery and related charges).
