Green light for return of 'official' bus stop to Limerick

A bus stop at Ballysimon Road is to be reinstated

A BUS stop which was unexpectedly removed in Limerick is set to be reinstated.

At this month’s metropolitan district meeting, City East councillors Sarah Kiely and Elena Secas brought a motion expressing concern about the fact the stop, and the signage that marked it, had been removed from Ballysimon Road, opposite Woodlawn Park.

Cllr Secas said she had campaigned for the bus stop, which is useful for elderly residents living across the road from it.

“I am not sure why the decision was made to remove it, but the councillors in the area should have been made aware and should have been included in the decision making,” she said.

Cllr Kiely said the bus stop was removed at 6.30 one morning “without notice, or more importantly consultation. “I’m being asked why this is,” she added.

The duo’s call was met with support from councillors Padraigh Reale, Ursula Gavan, Sharon Benson, Maria Donoghue, Shane Hickey-O’Mara and Elisa O’Donovan.

In a written response, John O’Callaghan a senior executive engineer confirmed it will be back up in the next fortnight.

“The removal of the stop was due to its unofficial status. I can confirm we have received communication from Bus Eireann indicating it will now be recognised as an official stop,” he stated.

Sean McGlynn of Active Travel apologised for the lack of communication around the removal.
