IT WAS a case of a bridge too far for a lorry driver in Limerick in the early hours of this Tuesday morning.

It is understood the driver's truck struck the railway bridge going over the Kilmallock Road (R512) on the outskirts of Limerick city. 

The lorry has been removed from the scene and rush hour traffic is unaffected. Similarly, trains arriving and departing from Colbert Station are running as normal this Tuesday morning.

Gardaí, Limerick Fire and Rescue Service and paramedics with the National Ambulance Service responded to the single-vehicle traffic collision that occurred at approximately 12.20am, confirmed a garda spokesperson.

“A lorry was involved in this collision. The driver of the lorry, a man aged in his 60s, was conveyed to University Hospital Limerick as a precaution.

“The Kilmallock Road is currently open for use,” said a garda spokesperson.

It is understood that the driver was suffering from shock and minor injuries due the the force of collision. The lorry was extensively damaged in the bridge strike.
