A MAN staggering on a road was arrested for his own safety, Newcastle West Court heard.

John Coffey, aged 38, of Collins Park, Abbeyfeale pleaded guilty to being intoxicated in a public place.

Inspector Barry Manton, prosecuting, said gardai received a report at around 9.30am on December 23, 2023 that a man was walking in an unsteady manner on the N21 at Barnagh, Newcastle West.

Insp Manton said gardai observed a man dressed all in black who was staggering on the hard shoulder.

“There was a strong smell of intoxicating liquor from him and he was very unsteady on his feet,” said Garda Manton. The inspector said Mr Coffey has over 30 previous convictions including three for intoxication, possession of a knife and drugs.

Michael O’Donnell, solicitor for Mr Coffey, said his client had been off the drink for a number of years.

“He is an alcoholic. He relapsed coming up to Christmas. He is off the drink again. He is trying to get into Bruree House,” said Mr O’Donnell. Judge Carol Anne Coolican fined Mr Coffey €150.
