Man charged with father’s murder

A YOUNG man has appeared in court in Limerick charged with the murder of his father.

A YOUNG man has appeared in court in Limerick charged with the murder of his father.

Gerard McNamara (23) of 14 Cedar Court, Kennedy Park, Limerick was this Tuesday charged with the murder of his father, Joseph O’Donnell (48), at the victim’s home at 85 Hyde Road, Prospect, Limerick on October 1, 2010.

The accused man appeared before Judge Eamon O’Brien in Limerick District Court this Tuesday.

Det Gda Pat Whelan of Roxboro Road garda station said Mr McNamara made no reply when charged with his father’s murder.

Wearing an orange Nike shirt, Mr McNamara remained silent during the brief hearing.

Solicitor Chris Lynch was assigned to represent Mr McNamara.

Insp Jerry Horan asked that the accused man be remanded in custody for a week.

Judge O’Brien granted the request and Mr McNamara will appear before the same court again via video link on October 18.

Known locally as Joey O’Donnell, the victim was an unemployed man who died from injuries sustained during an incident at his home.
