A ROMANTIC Limerick man decided to show his love for his wife on their 27th wedding anniversary – by taking out an advertisement in the Limerick Leader
Pat and Mary Long were married at the Holy Family church in Southill on August 3, 1984 and to mark their anniversary Pat, who is known as ‘Shrek’ by his friends, placed an advertisement (below) in the Wednesday edition of the Limerick Leader.
“It was a spur-of-the-moment type thing. You don’t know what you should be doing and I just thought I will put something in the paper. When I went in, the girl in the office said I should do it as Shrek,” said Pat who quickly pointed out that he also presented his ‘Princess Fiona’, Mary, with a bouquet of flowers to mark the special occasion.
Pat and Mary, who are both originally from St Mary’s Park, grew up in Southill met in 1982 through Pat’s sister. They have three children – Mark (27), Richard (25) and Lee (21).
Pat worked at Banta in Raheen for more than 25 years and his wife also worked there before the facility closed after Dell relocated its manufacturing operations to Poland in 2008.
Pat explains that his friends began to call him Shrek a number of years ago after he arrived for work having shaved off his hair and beard.
“I was a bit heavier back then and one of the fellas at work walked in and he saw me and he shouted Shrek. It stuck and since then they have all been calling me Shrek,” he said.
Mary says the past 27 years have flown by and that life with Pat is never Dull. “It has been great and fun-filled and I’m always smiling and laughing so I think I’ll stick with him for a while longer,” she told the Limerick Leader.
Pat says he is delighted to have met Mary. “She used to work with my sister and she was up and down to the house and just it went from there and we have been together ever since and to be honest it has been good and we have been lucky.” he said.
Pat refused to be drawn on what he plans to mark the couple’s 28th anniversary.
