NEW FIGURES show the number of people on the waiting list for local authority housing in Limerick city has increased to 3,027.
According to the figures, which were published at a meeting of the Housing and Social Policy SPC, the waiting list has grown by 1,100 since 2008.
Of those on the list, the majority (1,759) sought assistance on the grounds they are unable to afford their own accommodation. This compares to 783 in 2008.
“It is a sign of the times and the number of people on the waiting list does put a an extra burden on Limerick City Council as a housing authority and hopefully these figures will help us secure the necessary funding to ensure we are in a position to help out as many of those on the waiting list that we can,” said Cllr Gerry McLoughlin, chairman of the Housing and Social Policy SPC.
