Councillors welcome extra funding for cleaning, safety and coordination as Rathkeale prepares for its busiest season

Renewed calls for extra supports as Limerick town's population is set to double

Councillors in Rathkeale are set to take a holistic approach when dealing with Christmas this year

COUNCILLORS in Rathkeale are set to take a holistic approach when dealing with Christmas this year.

Public representatives are “crying out” for additional supports as the town prepares for its annual Christmas population surge, which traditionally sees numbers more than double.

Speaking at the November meeting of the Adare–Rathkeale Municipal District, Cllr Adam Teskey said the local authority has once again committed a special seasonal budget to help the town cope with the influx. He described the funding as “most welcomed” and said it follows repeated calls he has made in recent years.

The council’s allocation will focus heavily on street cleaning, with extra crews deployed on the main streets, approach roads and key public areas throughout December and early January. “Residents and businesses deserve to see their town maintained to the highest standard at this time of year,” Cllr Teskey said.

However, the supports extend beyond on the ground maintenance. Plans involving Limerick City and County Council, An Garda Síochána, the HSE and other relevant agencies will be rolled out over the festive period and into the new year. The coordinated approach, developed annually, aims to manage crowds, safeguard public health and ensure the town runs safely and smoothly during its busiest period.

Cllr Teskey also acknowledged Director General Dr Pat Daly for his “continued commitment” to providing financial backing for the seasonal plan.
