LOCAL councillors are calling for urgent road safety measures to be put in place outside Dromtrasna National School as traffic levels continue to increase in the area.

Cllr Liam Galvin and Cllr Francis Foley are canvassing for a full road safety audit, warning that a once quiet road has become extremely busy with school traffic. The councillors suggest that the audit could result in the installation of a speed ramp to help slow vehicles and protect children.

The montly meeting of Newcastle West Municipal District heard the school now serves a growing number of pupils from the Abbeyfeale area.

Cllr Galvin cited the recent addition of a second speed ramp outside the primary school in Tournafulla, describing it as “working a treat” in reducing traffic speeds.

Cllr Foley added that he believes the Department of Education should fund such safety projects, rather than the local council. “This is a matter of school safety and should be looked after by the Department,” he said.

A letter from senior executive engineer Ben Noonan confirmed that council roads personnel will meet with the school principal to discuss safety along the public roadway.

With the area’s population growing, councillors say immediate action is needed to ensure the road remains safe for pupils, staff, and local residents.
