€460,000 spent on prefabs


More than €460,000 is being spent in Laois renting temporary buildings to be used as classrooms.

In total 10 schools rely on prefabs to accomodate all their pupils. These are Scoil Bhríde, Portlaoise, Gaelscoil Thromaire, St Abbans NS, The Heath NS, St Paul’s NS, St Francis NS, Scoil Bhride, Ballyroan, Gaelscoil on tSlí Dála and Coláiste Iosagáin secondary school in Portarlington.

All but Coláiste Iosagáin have had prefabs since before 2014. The Portlarlington secondary school rented new temporary structures last year.

The total annual spend is €461,908 according to figures published in the Dáil by the Minister for Education Jan O’Sullivan
