A TEAM  from Limerick will join with Europe’s top golfers in travelling to New York later this month as the Ryder Cup ceremonial putter is handed over to Ireland ahead of Adare Manor's hosting in 2027.

The Leader has learned that members of the McManus family, Minister for Sport Patrick O’Donovan, members of Limerick City and County Council, councillors, senior gardai and a delegation from Adare Manor will be part of an “observer group”.

The green and white flag will be flown with pride at Bethpage Black golf course for the biennial golf competition between Europe and USA, which takes place from September 26 - 28.

Event control, traffic and transport  management, hospitality, stewarding, maintenance of the course and surrounding areas, policing, security, and ancillary compounds for park and ride facilities and media, will be among the areas studied to ensure Ryder Cup 2027 at Adare Manor will be the best one yet.

The Leader can reveal that Mr O’Donovan will be taking part in the symbolic handover of a ceremonial putter between host venues, symbolising the transfer of the contest's honour and history.

“This symbolic gesture is a tradition where the next host accepts the putter from the previous venue during the closing ceremony and displays it until it is passed on to the next venue's host during their own closing ceremony.

“The minister will be accepting the putter to symbolise that the next Ryder Cup tournament will be held in Adare Manor in 2027,” said a spokesperson for the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin is also expected to attend the Ryder Cup as he will be in New York for the United Nations General Assembly.

As Mr O'Donovan looked ahead to the trip Stateside and accepting the official handover putter for Adare Manor in 2027, he said it will be “one of the biggest sporting events that we've ever held on the island of Ireland”.
