Mayor John Moran and Adare-Rathkeale councillors sign on the dotted line
SWIM Ireland has been appointed to run Askeaton Swimming Pool and Leisure facility, it has been revealed this Tuesday.
An agreement has been signed following a meeting of stakeholders in the town.
Askeaton Swimming Pool and Centre has undergone major refurbishment by Martins Construction since its closure in 2023.
Significant flood protection measures have been implemented as part of the refurbishment works, along with an upgrade of the mechanical and electrical plant. These works have been partly funded by the Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund and Limerick City and County Council.
Swim Ireland will now begin a recruitment process with a view to re-opening the facility in autumn.

Mayor John Moran said the community in Askeaton has been waiting patiently for this remarkable facility to open again for the past two years.
“Today marks the beginning of the end of that wait. Appointing Swim Ireland to run the facility will ensure both professional management and a renewed focus on water safety for all ages. Swimming is a hugely accessible activity for young and old, and this news follows our dedication to investing in Grove Island Leisure Centre in Corbally last year.
"This partnership in Askeaton will bring national expertise to a vital local amenity. It’s another positive step towards building a stronger, healthier Limerick – one stroke at a time.”
Cathaoirleach of the Adare-Rathkeale Municipal District, Adam Teskey, said: “Askeaton Pool has always been at the heart of our community, and this news is a moment of real pride for West Limerick. This is a fantastic result for local families, schools and clubs. I warmly welcome Swim Ireland’s appointment and I’m confident they’ll deliver a top class facility.”
Director General of Limerick City and County Council, Dr Pat Daly, added: "We’re pleased to see the completion of essential flood relief works at this key piece of infrastructure.
"I want to thank everyone who has worked hard to bring us to this point, particularly our colleagues in Government whose funding support has enabled it to progress. This development reflects Limerick City and County Council’s ongoing commitment to rural regeneration and balanced regional development".
Local councillors Ger Ward and John O’Donoghue also expressed their delight.
Cllr John O’Donoghue said: “We need to move forward now and get the pool open as soon as possible. The pool has always had great support from locals. A serious amount of athletes and lifeguards came out of that pool. It’s a top class facility. Every facility we have in our towns and villages has to be kept open.”
Cllr Ward (pictured below right) said it’s been a lengthy process but it is now coming to fruition.
“We as councillors are fully supportive of this project since the get go and we wish Swim Ireland the very best and look forward to working with them for the next chapter of the swimming pool.”
Swim Ireland CEO Sarah Keane said: “Swim Ireland is delighted to be partnering with Limerick City and County Council and Askeaton Pool and Leisure DAC to re-open this fantastic facility. Swimming is consistently one of the most popular participation sports in the country and I know there is a long and proud swimming tradition in Askeaton.
"We look forward to working with clubs, schools, community groups and the people of Askeaton to deliver a vibrant and exciting programme in this great facility that gives everyone an opportunity to swim.”
"This partnership with Limerick City and County Council and the DAC marks an exciting step forward. We’re looking forward to working closely with the local community to make Askeaton Swimming Pool and Centre a thriving centre of activity once again.”
Further updates will be outlined to stakeholders when an exact opening date is made available by Swim Ireland.
