A MAN is being questioned at Henry Street garda station this Friday afternoon in connection with the theft of a bag of mail from a postman during his morning delivery.
The incident occurred at around 9.30am on Parnell Street. It is understood that the postman was delivering mail to an address and found his bicycle and bag of mail gone when he left.
A male was arrested in an apartment in the Parnell Street area shortly afterwards. The bag of post was recovered.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Henry Street on 061 212400.
A source with An Post told the Leader that this type of opportunist theft was especially common around Christmas time.
“Despite the best advice to people not to send cash in the post, it is still done and this is what these guys are looking for. They are after cash or cheques or anything of value with a Christmas card,” he said.
Just last month, a Limerick man was sentenced to two years in prison in connection with a highly organised operation involving the theft of over 1,000 items of stolen post.
Prosecuting gardai in that case said postmen had been targeted at various locations in the city as they delivered the mail.
