Man charged with assaulting Limerick shop worker

AN ANGOLAN national has been ordered to stay away from a city centre department store after he was charged with assaulting a member of staff at the store.

Rogerio Joao, 43, who has an address at Catherine Street appeared before Limerick District Court after he was charged with assaulting the woman at Michcael Guiney’s, William Street.

It is alleged the defendant, who did not speak in court, hit the woman with a chain shortly after 11.30am on September 21, last.

Mr Joao, who was arrested a short time after the incident, is also charged under the provisions of the Public Order Act with engaging in threatening and abusive behaviour at the store on the same date.

Insp Paul Reidy, said a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosections in relation to the incident and that directions would be required.

“It is an indictable matter and directions will be sought,” he said.

Mr Joao, who was granted bail, was ordered to stay away from the store pending the conclusion of the case.
