A MAN in his early thirties is being treated for serious head injuries following an assault in Newcastle West last night.
The man, who has not yet been named as his relatives are currently being contacted, was initially brought to University Hospital Limerick but later transferred to Cork University Hospital.
Meanwhile, the Garda investigation into the incident has swung into action. The assault took place about 2.30am this Monday morning and the scene in the Square in Newcastle West has been cordoned off and preserved.
No arrests were made at the scene nor have any arrests been made since. It is understood a number of other people were brought to hospital last night but it is not clear whether or not this was related to the incident in the Square.
Gardai have appealed for witnesses to come forward. And they will be checking all CCTV footage in the vicinity in their efforts to build up a picture of what happened and who was involved.
Anybody with information is asked to contact the Gardai in Newcastle West in confidence on 069-20650 or any Garda station.
