A LIMERICK banner has been hung from King’s Castle in Kilmallock ahead of the All-Ireland final on Sunday.
The flag is flying from the castle after Limerick City and County Council reached agreement with the Office of Public Works (OPW) and the National Monuments Service.
The OPW had advised the local community against hanging a giant banner that had adorned the castle in previous years citing health and safety reasons and a fear of causing damage to the structure.
In expectation of Limerick’s advance to this year’s All Ireland Senior Hurling final, Limerick City and County Council representatives met with colleagues in the OPW and the National Monuments Service in late June to come up with a solution to using King’s Castle in Kilmallock to support the team.
The 15th century tower is an icon in the town and has been used over the years to display banners for other cultural events.
Archaeologist with Limerick City and County Council, Sarah McCutcheon said: "It was agreed that Limerick City and County Council would apply for permission to the OPW to erect a banner on King’s Castle and, with all the paperwork complete, and with assistance from the OPW, the banner has now been successfully attached to railings on the castle with the help of Kilmallock Tourism Development Ltd.”
One deflated local said they were quite disappointed with the size of the flag, compared to the large banner that was put on the castle last year.
"It's a nice banner but the whole excitement regarding the one last year was the pure size of it.
"This one is nice and clean etc but you wouldn't be getting excited about it. Typical example of officials drawing perfectly within the lines."
