A RECORD entry of almost 250 walkers took part in the 2023 Galtee Challenge.
The hike covered 31km with 1,700m of climbing involved and is considered to be one of the best challenge walks in Ireland.
The biggest event in the Galtee Walking Club's annual calendar, the Galtee Challenge, is a walk that traverses the Galtee Mountains from Anglesboro Co Limerick to Cahir Co Tipperary, taking in the highest peaks of the range, including Galtymore, Galtybeg, Greenane, and Lyracappul.
Derek Lyons of Na Sléibhte managed to complete the route in just under five hours and Ann Daly and Bridie O'Connor of the Ballyhoura Bears completed all in under six hours.
The Galtee walking club was founded in 2003 and holds walks at all levels, mainly in the Galtee, Knockmealdown and Comeragh mountain ranges.
The walks take place on Sundays, with mid-week walks during the summer.
The Galtee Challenge was initiated in 2005, with only Pat Ryan and Thos O'Neill holding the accolade of completing each challenge, followed by Sheila Lenihan, who has completed 18.
