Limerick's Claire O’Riordan has been named in the Republic of Ireland squad
LIMERICK City Council is being urged to create a viewing event or a fan zone in the city centre for the Republic of Ireland's three group games during the upcoming Women’s World Cup.
Councillor Olivia O'Sullivan has put forward this request following the announcement that Newcastle West soccer star, Claire O’Riordan, has been selected for the Irish squad for the tournament which starts next month in Australia and New Zealand.
The Irish games in the group stages take place at 11am on Thursday, July 20 (against Australia); Monday, July 31 (versus Nigeria) and 1pm on Wednesday, July 26 (v Canada).
Cllr O'Sullivan said: “We have an opportunity to bring families and everyone supporting the team, into the city centre early in the day on three occasions in late July, on a typically quiet time of the year in the city, to enjoy a festive atmosphere for the games."
The tournament will be broadcast on RTÉ television.
